Diabetes in African Americans

More than three million African Americans have diabetes.  That’s about one in every eleven African American.  However, one third don’t know they have diabetes.  One in five African Americans adults have pre-diabetes Are you at risk? Family history of diabetes African Americans families are at greater risk Overweight and obesity are a risk Too little exercise, not being active Diets high in fat and low in fiber and complex carbs increase your risk


Symptoms of Diabetes

People with type 2 Diabetes have no symptoms.  When symptoms appear, they often include: Frequent urination Being very thirsty Tingling, pain, or numbness in the hands or feet Blurry vision Extreme hunger


Problems Related to Diabetes

Heart disease and stroke Kidney problems Foot problems (ulcers and amputation) Nerve damage Eye problems and blindness
